Miqyas Al Dhad is an innovative scale designed to advance Arabic literacy among students in grades 1-12. Supported by education ministries across the Arab world, it is a universal framework that measures Arabic proficiency, accurately assessing text complexity and student reading levels.
At its core, Miqyas Al Dhad features a specialised measurement scale. It includes the creation of an extensive linguistic corpus featuring over 8,000 Arabic texts, a comprehensive Pairwise comparison study involving more than 1,000 Arabic language teachers, a field study that included 120,000 students from private and public schools, and psychometric analyses powered by advanced algorithms. Together, these components form a trusted scale to address literacy challenges across the Arab world.

Miqyas Al Dhad is the result of a strategic collaboration between Alef Education, a global leader in education technology based in the United Arab Emirates that provides adaptive K-12 learning solutions designed to transform the educational experiences of students and educators worldwide and MetaMetrics®, an American company internationally renowned for its work in developing and improving educational assessments.
MetaMetrics® is characterised by its innovation of practical standards and ideas that support teaching and learning processes. The company has already developed the Lexile® Framework for Reading and the Quantile® Framework for Mathematics, making it the ideal partner for the development of Miqyas Al Dhad.
Miqyas Al Dhad Development
Our methodology is based on multiple levels of analysis and validation, with each step carefully designed to ensure that Miqyas Al Dhad is an effective, reliable tool for measuring students’ reading skills and can be adapted to the level of difficulty of texts.
A triangulation method of qualitative and quantitative research was used in the development of Miqyas Al Dhad scale. Triangulation in research increases the reliability and credibility of the scale by utilising multiple data sets, methods and resources to develop a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and how to overcome them. Each research step reflects our commitment to developing Arabic literacy skills with a rigorous, credible and culturally integrated methodology.
The triangulation methodology allowed us to refine the sensitivity of the scale. The scale is a comprehensive, integrated approach that goes beyond textual analysis and reflects the collaborative work of more than 110 experts, including 20 PhD holders from different disciplines across the Arab world, ensuring that all Arab curricula are taken into account.
This foundational work epitomises our approach to providing an accurate, culturally compatible measure that supports students, teachers and educational institutions across the Arab world.
